From October 16, 2026 to May 2, 2027
Palazzo Ducale di Genova announces the exhibition for the upcoming exhibition season: Renoir, Monet, Toulouse-Lautrec, Cézanne – 200 years of Art from the Scharf Collection, from October 16, 2026 to May 2, 2027 will bring to Italy for the first time over 140 masterpieces from a collection that remained private for a long time.
Thanks to a collaboration with The Scharf Collection and MondoMostre, the Fondazione Palazzo Ducale di Genova will be able to offer its visitors the story of two centuries of art history, through a selection of works curated by the Director of the Genoese institution, Ilaria Bonacossa: in addition to the masters mentioned in the title of the exhibition, works ranging from Goya to Tony Cragg and Katharina Grosse will be presented, passing through Corot, Bonnard, Matisse and Léger, to bear witness to the important and complex events of the history of collecting in the last century.
Among the most relevant German private collections, the Scharf Collection ranges from Goya to Realism, up to Impressionism, Cubism, and contemporary art. Its history is a family legacy that spans generations: it stems from the famous Berlin collection of Otto Gerstenberg, focused on the pioneers of Modernism and the French avant-garde. His daughter Margarethe Scharf managed to save the main core during the Second World War. The grandchildren Walther and Dieter Scharf each developed a branch of it. The one of Dieter, focused on Surrealism, has been on permanent loan to the Scharf-Gerstenberg Collection in Charlottenburg since 2008.
Walther Scharf, his wife Eve, and their son René expanded its French section with Monet, Cézanne, Matisse, and Picasso. Today René Scharf and his wife Christiane Scharf project the tradition into the present, collecting modern and contemporary art (including Sam Francis, Sean Scully, Daniel Richter, and Katharina Grosse) with a focus on the evolution of painting and the dialogue between figurative and abstract.
